Work at Taunton railway station began back in 2019 and the new ticket office at Taunton Railway station and new multi-storey car park opened in 2021.
Local MP Rebecca Pow said:
“Achieving the upgrade of Taunton station was one of my key commitments on my election and it is absolutely tremendous to see this come to fruition. I’ve worked hard to secure Government and LEP funding for this project and to work closely with the dedicated team of stakeholders involved including GWR and Network Rail. This successful project sees the transformation of this Victorian station to a great mix of the latest contemporary facilities combined with astutely restored listed buildings. This station represents the gateway to the county town of Somerset and the wider South West. Along with the improved rail services this really will help us with our economic recovery and will benefit the environment by helpful reduce reliance on cars. It’s a welcome achievement. It is really positive news that the new multi-storey car park at Taunton Station has also opened and I’m absolutely delighted it is virtually complete with this latest step. This work was started by the previous council with whom I worked in my early days as the MP, to secure an initial Government fund of £4.6m to get the scheme moving. Ideas developed through some round tables I held and a local survey have also been fed into the design of the car park and will also influence the landscaping. The car park will be a real benefit to those using the station.”
