West caravan and motorhome businesses are reporting a booming trade and welcome escape from intrusive European red tape.
Proposals which would have subjected caravans and light trailers to a cumbersome and intrusive inspection regime have been abandoned, following strong lobbying from South West Conservative Members of the European Parliament.
Original European Commission proposals would have hugely extended the scope of the current regime for MOT tests, as well as roadside tests on commercial vehicles. Caravan enthusiasts and the caravan industry feared the proposed Regulation would bring extra costs and inconvenience that could spoil their holidays and leisure time.
South West MEP, Ashley Fox was particularly involved in negotiating a much more measured package of roadworthiness measures and Prospective MP for Taunton Deane is fully supporting his endeavours: ‘Tourism is big business in this part of Somerset with people bringing in important trade through their caravans and motor homes and I am delighted that we are not hampering them with more red tape and unnecessary costs. I’ve been out meeting local businesses in the caravan trade and they would certainly support this view. Trade is buoyant right now and the more we can facilitate their flourishing industry the better.’
Tom Lower, Managing Director and owner of Somerset Motorhomes, based at Thornfalcon near Taunton reports one of the best starts to the year ever and is pleased it will not be bogged down with unwanted legislation:
“Despite the bad weather it has been the busiest start to the season since I took over in 2009. Many people are borrowing to buy motorhomes which indicates confidence in the market. It’s largely retired people buying our motorhomes, in the past they used to go on cruises but now they seem to be seeking an ‘adventure’ and they buy their motorhome to do just that! We are currently expanding and increasing our levels of stock.”
