THE recently-formed Save Wellington action group has met would-be MP for Taunton, Rebecca Pow, to express their fears about further mass housing developments in the town.
The group is fighting plans to build 750 homes at Jurston Farm on the south side of Wellington, saying it is a bridge too far with existing estates already under construction at Cades and Longforth Farm.
Members took Ms Pow, the Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, on a tour of the town to demonstration the impact another major development would have on the whole of Wellington.
Stops included Beech Hill and Laburnum Road – proposed link roads to the new estate – the town centre itself – which already suffers from major congestion – and the Longforth and Cades sites.
Afterwards, a Save Wellington spokesman said: “We were very grateful to Rebecca Pow for giving up her evening to hear our concerns.
“She seemed extremely sympathetic to our views and assured us she would make our concerns known.”
Ms Pow added: “I can understand the concern about this proposed new development and I was pleased to be able to have a detailed look at all aspects of the site with the action group.
“Aside from the volume of properties proposed, key concerns relate to access, road safety and the impact on the environment and I will do all that I can to put pressure on the relevant people to ensure these issues are considered.”
Meanwhile, Save Wellington members are hoping to meet the LibDem MP for Taunton, Jeremy Browne, in the near future.
They were also attending a Wellington Town Council meeting on Monday (September 1st) where members were due to consider an application for a grant towards their campaign costs.
And Save Wellington members were due to address a meeting of Taunton Deane Council’s Scrutiny Committee last night (Tuesday) at which the Jurston Lane proposal was on the agenda.
