In the driving rain and wind Rebecca Pow, Prospective Conservative MP for Taunton Deane joined over 60 dairy farmers and associated agricultural workers from all over Somerset late on Thursday evening (Dec 18th) at Sedgemoor Market, Junction 24, to hear their concerns about falling milk prices. Farmers For Action have been campaigning for the last eight weeks to get a better deal from retails and processors, staging meetings and protests all around the country.
‘Many dairy farmers are at their wits end as the price paid to them continues to plummet so that now they are getting less for their milk than it costs to produce, leaving some facing bankruptcy. Having been raised on a dairy farm (where I also worked), I have enormous sympathy for our dairy farmers and will do all that I can to speak up for their cause. It is a complex issue but needs addressing urgently not least for reasons of national food security’ said Rebecca Pow.
