Tourism Minister, Helen Grant MP has made a recent visit to the Museum of Somerset, now one of the top visitor attractions in the area as a result of successful renovation programme enabled by a Heritage Lottery fund grant. Whilst this museum has had a successful season, many tourist attractions in Somerset are still suffering as a result of last year’s flooding. Rebecca Pow, prospective Conservative MP for Taunton Deane, lobbied the minister for support for the County’s tourist industry.
Rebecca said; “70% of businesses in Somerset were affected as a result of the flooding with visitors staying away. This was largely a perceived view when in fact, the water had long gone. The loss to the industry is thought to be around £200m. I was pleased to raise with the minister, the need to get our beautiful county and especially the area in Taunton Deane back on the visitor agenda. I also raised this with the Visit Somerset organisation.’
Helen said; “It was a devastating time for this area when the floods hit, but we need to get the message out that Somerset is open for business.
Government initiatives such as the 'Countryside is GREAT' campaign will encourage people to take advantage of our spectacular natural landscape and holiday in the countryside. There are also a number of funds such as the rural development fund and the local growth fund that destinations such as Somerset should bid for to help further develop and promote the area.
I was delighted to meet Rebecca. I think she would make a wonderful contribution as the MP for Taunton Deane. She clearly understands how important tourism is to the area.”
