This week in PMQ’s Rebecca Pow MP highlighted the new opportunities for young people being created by the nuclear development at Hinkley Point in conjunction with Bridgwater and Taunton College.
For too long the South West has been underinvested in by other administrations leading to a significant skills shortage in the region. Thanks to this Conservative Government this is beginning to change, in part due to the championing of apprenticeships, something Rebecca is particularly keen to see continue. To this end Rebecca asked the Prime Minster to join her in welcoming the launch of the first nuclear science degree apprenticeship at Bridgwater and Taunton College in conjunction with EDF and the Ministry of Defence. Eighteen students are signed up on this course, specifically designed in conjunction with the nuclear industry.
Rebecca said:
‘I welcome the Prime Ministers endorsement of the new scheme at Bridgwater and Taunton College. Like Theresa May, I believe that it is crucial that businesses and education providers work together to ensure our young people are equipped with the right skills to help boost the local economy, and this is a great example of how that can be achieved. This Government is investing time and financial resources in increasing the number of apprenticeships and I am pleased that the business linked programme is starting to work in Taunton Deane.’
Bridgwater and Taunton college were delighted both that MP Rebecca Pow highlighted their new course at PMQs and to receive the PMs endorsement, as were EDF.
Clare Hatchard, EDF Energy’s Early Careers Recruitment Manager, said: “EDF Energy’s Technical Foundation Training Scheme provides young people with the opportunity to earn while they learn and gain on the job training. They complete a Degree Apprenticeship and at the end of it all can expect a promising career as a Technical Specialist or Engineer. It’s just one of the many routes we offer to join a growing industry.”
Hinkley C will not only provide much needed carbon free energy, but will also bring enormous economic benefits to Somerset, including 5,000 jobs and increased infrastructure spending.
