A highly successful and entertaining auction of sporting memorabilia held at Taunton Football Club raised £2000 to help more children in Halcon, one of the most deprived areas of Taunton to get involved in sport. The event was instigated by Sgt Andy Murphy who is being honoured with a Queens Award for his excellent work with the acclaimed One Team, in Halcon.
“This is such a great project, already children in Halcon, many of whom have never had sporting opportunities, are trying tag rugby, cage cricket (a new idea so that cricket can be played on a small, contained scale), high ropes and even boxing.
“The £2000 raised tonight will enable opportunities to be extended to swimming, hockey and football.
“Sport is such a leveller as I know from my own children’s experiences. It is good not just physically but mentally too. The more children that can have a chance to take part the better,” said Rebecca Pow, Prospective Conservative MP for Taunton Deane who attended the event where her husband Charles Clark was the auctioneer with BBC Somerset presenter Emma Britton hosting.
“Our work in Halcon is gradually making a difference, crime is down 30% with youth crime down 53%’ said Sgt Andy Murphy who heads up the One Team Project ‘and sport is part of our campaign, it can help children who have suffered many adversities to overcome their fears and build confidence, it really works.”
