Start the New Year on a positive note and take advantage of the huge opportunities emanating from the development of the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point. That’s the message from Prospective Conservative MP for Taunton Deane, Rebecca Pow following a special visit to the new site at the end of the year:
‘The Hinkley C development will be offering around 180 contracts to businesses, to the value of £2.3 billion pounds and there will definitely be a ripple effect in the Taunton Deane area. Many job opportunities will come here especially in terms of contracts for local supply chains for food, catering, transport and housing opportunities. I would urge students in particular to take advantage of the 400 – 500 ground breaking apprenticeships that will be on offer too. Many young people will start as semi skilled and be given a clear flight path to progress if they show the aptitude. The new innovation centre, just given the go-ahead at North Petherton will also be a key benefit to businesses involved in the construction phase.’
Speaking frankly, Construction Director Nigel Cann said:’ I want to ensure there’s a reallegacy locally and in every way I feel excited about the opportunities for people around here. This will be a world class operation. Whilst I’ve no doubt our Chinese backers are extremely clever they won’t be bringing in skilled workers or manufactured inputs, those will come from here so the local people have nothing to fear. We want to open a door for local employment.’
